School Library: Spatial Strategy

Denver, CO | 2024

Client: Denver Jewish Day School

The elementary school library relocation project involved strategically moving the library collection and teaching space to a new classroom that is 25% smaller due to ongoing renovations. Recognizing that downsizing the collection was not feasible, we focused on optimizing the new layout for efficiency and accessibility. Through a detailed inventory of both furnishings and the collection itself, we identified priorities for the new space, with an emphasis on reusing as much of the existing shelving and furniture as possible. We selected new extra-deep half height shelves for picture books under the existing windows, to substitute the built-in shelving in the previous space. Through thoughtful planning, careful listening, and collaborative design, the relocation not only preserved the library's extensive collection but also created a vibrant learning environment that continues to inspire young readers. This approach helped the school maintain its commitment to fostering a love for reading and learning despite spatial constraints.
